Charles and Minnie

The family was united at St. Joseph's Church on May 11, 1905, when 24-year-old, <tng i=0048>Minnie Kleinmann</tng> married <tng i=0280>Charles Rose</tng> (1880-1964), a 24-year-old barber from Pittsburgh. He was the son of Henry Rose and Veronica Ridge. Their wedding sponsors were W. W. Deczinger, <tng i=0047>B. R. Kleinmann</tng>, <tng i=0049>M. A. Kleinmann</tng>, and C. Rose. I don't know who W. W. was, perhaps a family friend. B. R. and M. A. were Minnie's brother and sister, and I'm assuming C. Rose was one of Charles' brothers, but I have no proof of that at this time. At the time, Charles lived at 4904 Yew Street in Pittsburgh, while Minnie lived at home at 4926 Sciota Street. I have not yet found a newspaper account of their wedding.

In 1906, the couple welcomed their first son into the world, <tng i=1426>Charles Rose Jr.</tng>. Two years later, in 1908, their second son, <tng i=1427>Joseph Rose</tng> was born. I am still waiting on baptismal records for the two boys.

When the 1910 Federal Census was taken, Charles and Minnie lived at 327 Cedarville Street, in a house owned by her father, Rudolph Kleinmann. At the time, they lived there with their two children, Charles Jr. (age 4) and Joseph (age 2). Charles Sr. worked as a barber in his own shop.

In the next decade, the family welcomed <tng i=2743>Arthur Rose</tng> in 1909, <tng i=2747>Mary Rose</tng> in 1910, <tng i=2745>Edna Rose</tng> in 1913, and <tng i=2744>Robert Rose</tng> in 1914. I am still waiting on baptismal records for the four children.

As required by law, Charles registered for the World War I draft in September 1918. Although his registration card is difficult to read, it does give a clue as to the location of his barber shop, by listing his employment address as 431 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh. In 1918, at the age of 12, Charles' first son, Charles, began barbering for his father at this location.

When the 1920 Federal Census was taken, Charles (age 39) and Minnie (age 39) continued living in Rudolph’s house at 327 Cedarville. Charles continued his work as a barber, and they lived in the house with their 5 children, Charles (age 13), Arthur (age 11), Mary (age 9), Edna (age 6), and Robert (age 5). The oldest 4 children were in school.

Just after the 1920 census was taken, Minnie gave birth to her last child, <tng i=2746>Ruth Rose</tng>. I am waiting on her baptismal record.

In 1928, the family celebrated it's first wedding, when oldest son Charles married Elizabeth Kaven.

When the 1930 Federal Census was written, virtually nothing changed with the family from the previous 10 years. Charles and Minnie still lived at 327 Cedarville Street,

327 Cedarville, Pittsburgh

a house they now owned which was worth about $5,500. They lived there with their children Arthur (age 22), Mary (age 18), Edna (age 15), Robert (age 12), and Ruth (age 9). Charles continued his work as a barber in his own shop, while Arthur was a laborer, Mary worked as a stenographer, and Ruth was in school. None of the men were military veterans.

At the time of the 1940 Federal Census, the family continued to live at 327 Cedarville. The value of the house is now listed as $3,000. According to a mark on the page, Minnie was the one who supplied the information to the enumerator. Charles and Minnie (both 59) lived there with their children Arthur (age 32), Mary (age 29), Edna (age 26), and Robert (age 25). In terms of education, Minnie stated that her and Charles finished sixth grade, while Arthur, Mary, and Edna finished two years of high school. Robert got as far as Eighth Grade. On the employment side, Charles continued his work as a barber in the barber shop earning $600 per year, while Arthur was a street car conductor for the Pittsburgh Railway, Mary was a bookkeeper, Edna was a stenographer for a paper company at a salary of $200, and Robert was an engineer apprentice for a machine manufacturing company, earning a nice salary of $860.

On July 31, 1964, after 59 years of marriage, Charles Rose died at the age of 84 at Mayview State Hospital in South Fayette Township, PA, from a cerebrovascular accident, due to arteriosclerotic heart disease. At the time, the family lived at 454 Mapleton Avenue in Mt. Lebanon Township, PA. As of yet, I do not have his obituary. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Rudolph’s plot. He did not leave a will.

Mary lived for another 17 years as a widow, eventually living with her daughter, Edna, in an apartment at 261 S. Winebiddle in Pittsburgh. On May 16, 1981, at the age of 100 and a half, Mary Kleinmann Rose died from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. From her obituary, it was noted that Mary was the “.. beloved mother of Charles, Arthur and Robert Rose of Calif., Edna Rose, Ruth Brodie and the late Mary Dinkfelt; also survived by five grand, 10 great grand and five great great grandchildren.” Her funeral was held from St. Joseph’s Church Bloomfield, Pittsburgh, and she is buried with her husband in Rudolph’s plot. She did not leave a will.

The Children

Charles B Rose

Charles graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and Duquesne High School, and attended Duquesne University for two years. In 1928, 22-year-old <tng i=1426>Charles B. Rose</tng> married Elizabeth Kaven.

When the 1930 Federal census was taken, Charles (age 23) and Elizabeth (age 24) lived in a rented house at 836 Freeland Street, in Pittsburgh's 18th ward. Rent was $30 per month, and the couple owned a radio. Charles' occupation was listed as barber.

The couple had two children, Elizabeth and Charles W.

I still don't have a 1930 or 1940 Federal census for the family.

From 1943 to 1945, Charles served in the Army, stationed in Germany during World War II. After the war, Charles (who went by the nickname "Chick") ran the barber shop in the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Pittsburgh from 1945 until his retirement in 1972. He liked to fish, and still played cards every day up to his death.

He lived to be 102, passing away in 2008 in Butler County. He is survived by ".. a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth (Roy) Garland of Zelienople; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Rose of Bellevue."

Joseph Rose

Not much is known yet about <tng i=1427>Joseph Rose</tng>. He appears on the 1910 Federal census, but not with the family on the 1920 census. Since he isn't old enough to marry yet, I am assuming he died sometime between 1910 and 1920.

Arthur Rose

Not much is known yet about <tng i=2743>Arthur Rose</tng>. He appears on all the census records through 1940 living at home with the family. I have not yet been able to find a marriage record or death record for him.

Mary Rose

Not much is known yet about <tng i=2747>Mary Rose</tng>. She appears on all the census records through 1940 living at home with the family. Her married name was Dinkfelt, but so far have found no record of her marriage. She died in 1977 according to the cemetery records of Calvary Cemetery, and is buried there with her parents in her grandfather Rudolph's plot.

Edna A Rose

<tng i=2745>Edna Rose</tng> never married. After moving out of the house sometime after 1940, she ended up taking her mother in later in life. The pair lived in an apartment at 261 W. Winebiddle in Pittsburgh at the time of Mary's death. Edna died in 1996 at the age of 83, and her funeral was held from Immaculate Conception Church. As of yet, I don't know where she is buried.

Robert J Rose

Some time after 1940, <tng i=2744>Robert Rose</tng> married Mary Virginia Kretzler. Robert also served in World War II, as a 1st. Lt. in the U. S. Army. He received the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Easter Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.

After his time in the military, he worked for the Industrial Appraisal Company. He died in the fall of 2008 at the age of 93. His obituary did not list any children (just nieces and nephews), so at this point I'm not sure if he had any children or not.

Ruth A Rose

Some time after 1930, <tng i=2746>Ruth Rose</tng> married Joseph Brodie. I have yet to find her on the 1940 Federal Census.

Ruth died in 2007 at the age of 87. According to her obituary, she was ".. wife of the late Joseph R. Brodie; loving mother of Mary Ann Donovan and Patricia Geiger; also survived by brothers Charles and Robert Rose, five grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson." It did not list where she was buried.
